OHSAS 18001

What is it OHSAS 18001?

OHSAS 18001 is a British Standard, and whilst internationally recognised, is not an international standard as the ISO 9001 and 14001. It addresses the requirements of a management system for Occupational Health and Safety and is intended to help organisations control and manage health and safety risks. The standard was brought about by a desire to create a mechanism whereby Health and Safety Performance levels could be meaningfully assessed.

The adoption of a management system meeting the requirements of OHSAS 18001 addresses the manner in which processes are delivered in the work place and looks for them to be improved. The resultant improvement in accidents and hazard potential will lead ultimately to a reduction in the accident rate and ensuing downtime and lost production time generally. Employee safety and the standard of working conditions will be subject to improvement because the system will expect objectives and responsibilities to be well communicated and understood by all. OHSAS 18001 ensures compliance with current legal requirements, reducing the risk of penalties or possible litigation.

It follows then that your company is able to clearly demonstrate not just high levels of health and safety but illustrate a history of continually improving these standards.

As with ISO 9001 and 14001 your opportunity for success within the tendering environment will be considerably enhanced. Your company will also be eligible for a reduction in insurance premiums if the system is certified by a recognised accredited body.
